"The Dead Manīs Hand" in Poker

On August 2, 1876, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok was playing a game of low stakes poker at his usual table in the corner near the door at Sweeney's Silver Dollar Saloon in Deadwood.

That day Jack McCall intered the bar behind Wild Bill, withdrew his .45 revolver, and shot him in the back of the head, killing Hickok instantly.


Eyewitnesses to the shooting said, that Wild Bill held a pair of eights (black eights of clubs and spades), and a pair of Aces (black aces of clubs and spades), which ever since that moment have been known as a "dead man's hand."

But what was the fifth card that Hickok was holding in that poker hand ?. Nobody will ever know, as the town of Deadwood, and most of its records, burnt to the ground in 1879.
